Purpose
AgroPortal is a community ontology repository that provides core services for hosting, sharing, discovering, and accessing ontologies, vocabularies, and other semantic artefacts through APIs (including the MOD-API standard), SPARQL endpoint. It supports versioning, mappings, and annotation tools. For instance AgroPortal enables semantic annotation of datasets using controlled vocabularies it hosts, thereby enhancing semantic interoperability. This is particularly relevant in the context of CEADS (Common European Agricultural Data Space). By enabling the uniform publication and reuse of these “data models,” it directly supports the functions of a “vocabulary service”, two components identified as key in the DSSC blueprint for achieving semantic interoperability. In this role, AgroPortal acts as a technical brick that ensures consistent, FAIR-compliant access to shared semantics, fostering data integration and interoperability across domains and data spaces thanks to the underlying OntoPortal technology.
About
AgroPortal is an open, community-driven vocabulary service dedicated to the agricultural and agri-food domains, designed to host, share, and interconnect data models (aka semantic artefacts or knowledge organisation systems) such as ontologies, vocabularies, and thesauri about multiple aspects of agricultural data: technologies, breeding, food, plant phenotypes and traits, anatomy, etc. Built on the OntoPortal technology, it provides a comprehensive environment for ontology publishing, discovery, alignment, versioning, and semantic annotation, while ensuring interoperability with external data catalogues and platforms. By serving as both a technical infrastructure and a collaborative hub, AgroPortal supports researchers, data providers, and institutions in making their data FAIR—Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable—thus fostering knowledge integration and innovation across agri-food.

- Deployments in operation
- AgroPortal is currently at a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 8–9, as it is fully operational and deployed across multiple institutional and national infrastructures. Since its launch in 2015, it has evolved from a research prototype into a production service at INRAE, officially supported, maintained, and integrated within the institute’s information systems and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) ecosystem. Deployments in operations:
- Dependencies
- AgroPortal is built on the OntoPortal generic technology ( https://ontoportal.org ), which provides the foundation for ontology repositories such as BioPortal, EcoPortal, EartthPortal, etc.. To be functional, AgroPortal relies on a standard set of technological bricks such as Ruby on Rails (for the web application), Redis (for caching and indexing), and Virtuoso (for RDF storage and SPARQL endpoint). Despite the main software prerequisites required for deploying and running the platform, beyond this software stack, AgroPortal does not depend on other external tools, services, or hardware components—it can be deployed as a standalone system following OntoPortal’s reference architecture.
- Business offerings
- AgroPortal is offered as a managed service / SaaS-style platform by INRAE. It is hosted centrally, maintained and operated for end-users so they can publish, search, access and annotate semantic artefacts without needing to deploy their own instance. There is a support offering: users can report issues, request help or raise discussions via the AgroPortal GitHub “project-management” repository (which consolidates documentation, issue tracking, project board etc.): https://github.com/agroportal/project-management. The support contact email is [email protected] Terms and Conditions are described here: https://doc.jonquetlab.lirmm.fr/share/e6158eda-c109-4385-852c-51a42de9a412/doc/terms-conditions-naDsDo2Zxq#h-agroportal-terms-and-conditions-english
- Additional functionalities
- Beyond its default building block functionalities (ontology hosting, search, browsing, versioning, API, etc.), the OntoPortal technology realizes several additional functionalities that extend or integrate other building blocks of a data space ecosystem. These additional features have been developed by members of the OntoPortal Alliance (AgroPortal, EcoPortal, SIFR BioPortal) and enhance interoperability, provenance, and FAIRness support. They include:
- Similar/competing implementations
- EBI Ontology Lookup Service, SKOSMOS
