Interoperability Test Bed
The Interoperability Test Bed is a service offered by the European Commission’s DIGIT to facilitate the conformance testing of IT systems. The Test Bed is itself a software system that can be both downloaded and installed locally, but also reused through a shared online installation operated by DIGI
Purpose
The InteroperabilityTest Bed supports the DSSC objective of enabling interoperable, high‑quality data sharing by offering a controlled environment for validating semantic artefacts (RDF, SHACL, OWL, UML, XML), ensuring compliance with SEMIC standards, and enabling harmonised semantic interoperability across European data spaces.
About
The Interoperability Test Bed is a service offered by the European Commission’s DIGIT to facilitate the conformance testing of IT systems. The Test Bed is itself a software system that can be both downloaded and installed locally, but also reused through a shared online installation operated by DIGIT. It offers an intuitive web user interface and rich integration features that allow administrators to define their project’s overall testing setup as well as users to connect and run tests.

- Public sector interoperability, European data spaces, standardisation bodies, Member State IT systems.
- Geographical application area
- Europe-wide, globally applicable due to open-source licensing
- Deployments in operation
- Active use in SEMIC activities validating Core Vocabularies and Application Profiles. Used by EU public administrations for conformance testing of semantic models and specifications. Deployed both as a Commission‑hosted service and in national Member State infrastructures.
- Dependencies
- ITB Runtime & Workflow Engine (core execution environment). SEMIC validation services (SHACL, XML, UML, OWL) plugged into ITB. GITB Test Description Language interpreter. Web browser for UI or API client for automated pipelines
- Business offerings
- Public, free service hosted by the European Commission. Open‑source distribution available for organisations wanting to deploy internally. Support available through the ITB community, SEMIC network, and DIGIT service channels.
- Additional functionalities
- Executes SEMIC‑specific test suites for validating Core Vocabularies, Application Profiles, and semantic artefacts. Integrates validators for SHACL, OWL, UML, XML, JSON, and CSV. Provides a structured workflow engine supporting multi-step, conversation-based tests. Offers reusable community test suites for semantic interoperability implementations. Allows on‑premise deployment for Member States needing controlled execution environments.
