Purpose

OntoPortal enables data sharing by providing a platform to publish and reuse ontologies, ensures interoperability through semantic annotation and vocabulary alignment, and supports data sovereignty by allowing institutions to host and control their own portals.

About

The primary mission of an OntoPortal installation is to host and serve ontologies and semantic artefacts. The portals accept resources in multiple knowledge representation languages: OWL, RDFS, SKOS, OBO and UMLS-RRF. Ontologies are semantically described with rich metadata (partially extracted from the source files), and a browsing user interface allows to quickly identify, with faceted search, the ontologies of interest based on their metadata.

OntoPortal is widely deployed and actively used across multiple domains and communities: OntoPortal Virtual Appliance Installations: Since version 3.0 in 2020, OntoPortal has had 98 unique registered accounts, totaling 135 appliance deployments. In 2022 alone, 60 appliances “called home”, including 19 running on AWS (Amazon Machine Instances). Global Usage Footprint: As of 2025, 273 deployments of the OntoPortal virtual appliance have been recorded, underscoring its broad adoption. Public Ontology Repositories Powered by OntoPortal: OntoPortal underpins a growing network of discipline-specific repositories, including BioPortal (biomedicine), AgroPortal (agri-food), EcoPortal (ecology), EarthPortal, BiodivPortal, MatPortal, and others such as OntoPortal-Astro, IndustryPortal.

OntoPortal technology is mainly distributed as an open-source platform that organizations can install and manage locally.
